Mika: While all that is true with helping in battle I think the Heart Meter in Amie was a way to see how much friendship you have. I have been able to evolve Pokemon by using Amie and not doing tons of battling or travelling with them. It's like Super Training versus the Vitamins just an easier way of making you have a strong bond with your Pokemon. *nods head*

I know Amie helps your Pokemon perform better I get that however they get a stronger bond with you from using the Amie. They won't preform better if the bond isn't high enough.
