Yeah they really should like Unova was so separated from everything. Kanto was first so makes sense but Johto allowed you to go to Kanto and continue on a journey. Both Hoenn and Sinnoh had contests while Unova and Kalos were their own thing. I wish I had played all of them so I know what it's like. XD

Well in ruby sapphire and emerald you could go back later in the game and battle the gum leaders again since they made the battle system thing where trainers call you if they want to battle you again. I kind of forget sinnoh since I only played one of the games and I had no idea what to do without my friends help... So yeah...
